News from the Farm

Hey there, it’s been a minute since our last update, so we thought we would catch you up on the happenings here at Alderney Roots.

Our incredible volunteers have been our saving grace this summer, diligently picking French beans and potatoes week after week. We are so grateful, especially Sam, who’s been holding down the fort single-handedly during the school holidays.

As for recent tales from the field, we’ve had our share of ups and downs. Unfortunately, a flock of pigeons managed to get underneath our bird netting and claimed an entire broccoli bed as their own, whilst the bout of high winds at the beginning of August destroyed our entire patch of squash. There are sunnier days ahead with new veggies primed to make their debut in your boxes soon. Keep an eye out for the arrival of aubergines, celery, mizuna, and cabbage, with parsnips and Brussels sprouts in late autumn.

Peeking into 2024, we get ready in September to prep the grounds for cover cropping. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook / Instagram for updates and look out for an exciting announcement about our future plans.

As always, thanks for being a part of our veggie journey – your support keeps us growing strong!

Cavolo Nero

This is a quick and tasty approach to cavolo nero (or black kale), and tastes just like the crispy seaweed you would find on the menu in a Chinese restaurant or takeaway. Serve as a snack with an ice-cold beer, or as a side to an Asian feast. The sesame seeds are a really nice finishing touch. You could also try adding a little finely chopped fresh chilli too, if you fancy. https://www.riverford.co.uk/recipes/cavolo-nero-crispy-seaweed
